Having trouble finding compatible theme for 2.1.2

I just bought a new domain, MomReviews, and I am trying to replace the Classic and Default themes with something else.
For each theme I have tried, I am downloading the theme file, uploading it to wp-content/themes, and activating it at Presentation->Themes. The problem I’m having is, no matter what theme I try, what it looks like on the Demo page and what it looks like on my blog are VASTLY different. For example, if the theme’s sidebar is a different color than the background, on my blog it will be all the same color.
I’ve never had this problem switching themes for my main blog Table for Five, so I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. Could someone please help, and let me know what additional info you need? Thank you so much
(P.S.)-why doesn’t the drop-down menu have 2.1.2 as a choice?
