    Hello,

I am having an issue with the header video. I am currently using a YouTube video as my header and am having issues with it becoming blurry.

It appears that for first time visitors to the website, the video does not play or plays but it is very blurry. When returning to the site in the future, this issue does not appear to occur.

For reference, this is what happens when you visit the site and the video does not play: https://imgur.com/hkWipie – and other times it will play very blurry but when you refresh it plays normally.

What would cause this and is there a solution for this?

    Hi,

The short answer here is “no” I’m afraid.

The long answer is this …

The YouTube header video isn’t actually controlled by the theme. It’s controlled by WordPress Core Custom Header Theme Support. This means that how the YouTube is embedded is extremely difficult to change because it would mean modifying WordPress Core controls and / or frontend JavaScript even if the problem was caused by how the video was embedded …

… however, we suspect that the problem is not caused by the embed itself but by how YouTube delivers the video and chooses the quality to use based on the available bandwidth of the client.

This suspicion is further upheld by the fact that you mention that returning visitors do not see the blurry video. Why? Because nothing in WordPress or the theme would be remembering this. What is more likely is that either YouTube is remembering what bandwidth is available and providing a higher quality video accordingly second time around.

What you might want to do to bypass this issue is to host a high quality version of the video on your own server and use that instead?

Thank you a lot for the response.

I ended up uploading my video to my server and am using that instead. Works without any problems now!

Thanks a lot and Happy New Year!
