Help backing up WordPress 2.9.2

    I recently took over the blogging responsibilities at work, and noticed that there was an upgrade to 3.3.1. Seems that the blog is currently at 2.9.2 and I seem to be stuck in being able to both backup and upgrade the blog. Any of the backup plugins I am trying to install are only compatible with 3 and higher, and I am concerned about upgrading before backing it up.

    I reached a breaking point where I went to upgrade anyway, but for some reason, when I go to connect and enter the hostname, username and password, it says that there is an error with the connection. Ugh!

    Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    I should also clarify, I wanted to try and install the backup “WordPress Backup to Dropbox” but couldn’t b/c 1) don’t have a compatible version of WordPress and 2) cannot get my information to connect and install.

    You can always backup your database manually. I would also strongly recommend that you carry out a series of smaller upgrades (rather than 1 large upgrade) with repeated backups and full site testing after each step.

    2.9.2 -> 3.0 -> 3.2 -> 3.3.1

    esmi – thank you. i’m new to blogging and not super technologically inclined, so was a little intimidated by backing up the database manually. but that might be the best way to go. i’m not quite sure how to do a full site test after each step, but maybe there is another feed somewhere about that i could read.

    By full site testing esmi means that you should visit your site after upgrading and make sure everything works like it should.

    The content should display, posts and pages should be shown correctly. You should be able to login and make changes without errors. There should be no conflict with your theme or plugins. Any changes you make on the backend should be reflected correctly.

    Basically, use the site and test if it works.

    Yeh – what fonglh said. 🙂 Before each upgrade step, ensure that all plugins are deactivated and that you are using the default WordPress theme. Then after each upgrade:

    1. Check the site. Is it working?
    2. Reactivate your old theme. Is the site still working?
    3. Reactivate plugin 1. Is the site still working?
    4. Repeat step 3 until all plugins are active again.

    This way you find out as early as possible if there are going to be any compatibility problems with your current theme and/or plugins.
