Help: Show Active Category (while browsing a post) menu

Morning all,

I’m using the code below in the pastebin to highlight what category I am in when browsing my site and it works just fine but now I am using a drop-down menu for children so any categories that are children are not visible when on a post that is a child.

To help navigation for the user is there anyway this code can be amended to show parent category highlighted as well as child?

This way at least the user knows the main section they are in.
