What do you mean by that it disabled the correct display of the images on the site? That happened after you installed the plugin they recommended?
That plugin probably does work ( I haven’t tested it yet ) but as the article recommends you’ll most likely need some custom CSS to get it displaying correctly.

So I started afresh, and I have uploaded Instagram icon, and created my “Social Media” menu.
All I want to do is add the icon to the existing menu that I am using.
This tutorial seems to want to place all of these on every page.
There is Menu Settings – is there something there that I can do to place this on the existing menu please?

One thing doing this has done – and that is to change the order of the exiting menu items.
Is there a simpler way to just add this to existing menu please?

Hi David,
To add the icon to your site’s primary menu will require a plugin. The default menu of the theme doesn’t support images, only text, so you’re trying to do something the theme wasn’t designed to do. That’s why plugins exist – to change the default functionality of a given feature.
If the plugin you’re trying to use isn’t working the way you expect, please contact support for that plugin directly. We can only provide help with theme itself, not with changes made to the theme by code injected by a plugin we don’t control.
Without using plugins the only option to add the icon to the primary menu is to add a regular Instagram link as a custom link, and then use CSS to hide the menu label text and replace it with an image. That’s a hack, though, and likely won’t look very good.
The best and simplest way to add social media icons to a menu in this theme is to use the Jetpack Social Menu which this theme supports, and which is a second, separate menu from the primary site menu.

I have followed the second document to set up an Instagram menu item as a custom link
I can now see the Instagram menu item in my existing menu via the dashboard
It is also now showing up on the menu page.
