• Hi folks,
I am thinking of starting a WordPress blog (got an awful lot of medical experiences) – does it completely blow of one’s brains to set up the software and get it to work?
Does WordPress function like our good old Facebook / Twitter, or does one download the software onto one’s computer; in other words, can one post from an Internet café, or does one need to drag one’s computer along wherever one goes?
I see you speak about ‘hosting’ – where and how do I get one?
Is it possible to have the blog in 2 languages – separate content in English and in Russian? Or at least get it machine-translated?
And by the way, does WordPress mind advertising? I hope to recover my medical bills somehow, otherwise with the home currency 50% down one may go pauper pretty soon
    PS
I had a double eye surgery, so the prospect of browsing through the whole Wikipedia too long does not really make me happy; that’s why I’d rather have a sensible host, if any such thing exists

    Thanks for help!

  • WordPress is like Facebook / twitter, you access it on the internet from any computer / phone / tablet etc.

Usually people purchase a domain name, and then subscribe to web hosting. The WordPress software is installed on the host’s computer and is on the internet 24/7, you manage the website much as you manage the settings in Facebook. Look for “Web hosting, WordPress, cPanel”, this will find suitable providers. Prices vary, important features are support hours and support method (phone / email / text chat), also backup and speed.

You can get free hosting at http://wordpress.com/ and they will give you a free name as a prefix. There are other options there too, being free there are some restrictions.

    Yes multi-lingual blogs are possible.

Yes you can sell advertising when you have a hosted site, at wordpress.com you cannot sell advertising, they will be selling the advertising.

You will be able to find instructions in Russian online.
