Edit the Portfolio page.
Select Add Media
Use Upload file to upload the images you want to use.
Then select Create Gallery and select the uploaded images that you want in the gallery.
Once you have finished, select Create Gallery followed by Insert Gallery.

I followed your tips and created the gallery.
when I clicked on ‘view page’ to preview what I had done, I got a blank page with the message ‘nothing found’.
what have I missed?

Yes – that’s correct. What happens if you publish/update the page and then view the final page on the front end?
My site is live, so I was hoping I could get the galleries/portfolio ready before putting it online.
I just did a test. I created a new gallery page, completely independent of my portfolio page. That one worked fine. The problem must be with the portfolio page – maybe because it is not live yet.
If I can’t get the portfolio to work I will just create the galleries as separate pages and go with that.

can I change the size of the thumbnails in the gallery?
Yes – the thumbnails are generated using the images dimensions you set in Settings -> Media. However changing those dimensions now will only affect future image uploads. To amend existing thumbnails, you’ll also need to use http://ww.wp.xz.cn/extend/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/
