How do I get three columns?

    Admittedly, I’m new at WordPress so am probably asking a silly question, but I cannot get 3 columns for the life of me. I have a bar on the right and the space to the left spans 2 column widths. In looking at the preview for the theme, can someone help me identify the term used for the boxes in the center? I thought they were “widgets” but I only find a way to have widgets in the sidebar. Thank you.
