Sorry that you ran into issues here!
First, renewals right now only happen when you reach the renewal date (or just right before it). You don’t typically want to renew in the middle of the period (for example, if you have a listing that goes for 6 months, what does it mean to renew on month 2?)
With that said, free listings are a weird combination of things–they are time limited, but you don’t pay for them. So at the end of the listing period, a renewal link will be sent to them which they must click to renew the listing for another period.
Does that make more sense now?

Yes–the notices are 100% configurable under Directory Admin->Manage Options, Email tab, Template-sub tab. Scroll to the bottom for “Notices” and then you can add a specific notice for X days before renewal, where X is your desired number of days.
