in my template ?
and what is $item ?
is $item whether menu title or not?

Sorry, you should not “use” this function, but see this function as example.

I mean to get the thumbnail src you need to know menu item ID, if you have one you can get src:
print wp_get_attachment_image_src( get_post_thumbnail_id( $menu_item_ID ) );
