My site has been badly hacked and I am doing a clean install. I have exported my posts to XML but wondered do I need to check the XML is clean from viruses? If so how would I go about this.

look through for <script> tags. Those would be suspicious.

You can’t really “restore” from an XML file as it’s usually used to transfer stuff from a live site to another live, empty one. You may be missing your media and you won’t get the plugin and theme settings.

If the site is still up, use a plugin like backupwordpress to get a backup so you get get the database as well as the files and textual content.

Great thanks – are the virus and malware able to get into the database backups? Just worried I will be bringing the problems into the fresh install.

Potentially, yes. But the same problem exist in importing the XML.
