What are you talking about? There’s no “upload theme” button in WordPress. Could you post a screenshot so we can see what you’re talking about? Or a link to it?
To install a theme, you first download the theme. This will probably be a ZIP file. Then you put that theme on your website in the /wp-content/themes directory. Then you go to your WordPress admin pages and select Presentation->Themes and then choose your theme.
The documentation has it all:
Using_Themes#Adding_New_Themes
p.s. I bet he’s talking about this site…
http://themes.wordpress.net/
Yeah, that occurred to me too.
The “UPLOAD THEME” links are for theme creators to upload their themes onto that site for other people to use. Not for you to get the themes yourself.
It’s on the Theme viewer page. I open my blog site and then scroll down the right side to THEMES. Then I don’t have a clue. I will read youearlier responses later, I’m late for a meeting right now. But I REALLY appreciate your help!!

Don’t know where WP Content directory is here. Here’s the link to the site. If I click on themes…well you know the rest. I’m just trying to use theme 13016 for my blog.
Did you have a chance to READ the documentation I linked above – before doing anything?
No moshu, I did not see your link right away. I was in a rush to make it to a meeting. But now I have printed out the documentation you linked to and will try to figure out what some of the instructions mean. You are not dealing with a total computer dummy, but one who has so much yet to learn. At 60, I better work fast! I do appreciate the help.

Here’s the link to how far I got. Not sure what I do next. the FTP client on GoDaddy is Java. I downloaded the theme data into a file on my computer. Now how do I get it into this server? To be honest, I’m not even sure how to ask the right questions, but I’m getting closer!
Okay, simple version.
1. Download the theme to your computer. It will be a ZIP file, so unzip it.
2. Use an FTP Client. Not GoDaddy’s java stuff, but a real FTP client. You’ll connect to your site using your ftp username and password (same as the java app).
3. Upload the unzipped theme directory and all its contents to /wp-content/themes/.
It’s really straightforward. Read those instructions, they were written to show you how to do it.
Side note: This is another reason that I hate those automatic installer systems for WordPress. If you use them to get WordPress working, then you are left with absolutely no idea how your site actually works and/or how to customize it. Even using an FTP client becomes unnecessary, so when you do need to upload a theme, you have no idea how.
Thanks Otto! So, I go find an FTP client to download that is compatible with Vista. Then I what – copy and past the unzipped list of files from the theme into the FTP client?
I know this sounds dumb, but I don’t mind if you don’t. The instructions are written to help those who at least understand what some of the terminology means. I think I see your point about automated installers, but for some of us who are more interested in writing and interacting than in the nuts and bolts of how it all works, they do serve a purpose. However, in this case, you win. I’m am slowly getting to where I’d like to be, aggravating those who are more savvy along the way. You and moshu have been a huge help. I can guarantee that I will heve more questions before you can type WordPress though.
Otto, I downloaded smartFTP and I think I got the theme file transferred but still don’t understand where I will find it on my site. documentation says that I go to Presentation, Available Themes, click on the theme I want and then click on View Site at the top of the page. . Problem is the available themes page has only two themes on it and I have to go to the theme archive. When I find the onle I want, there is not View SIte at the top of the page. another loop
What is this “Theme Archive” that you’re referring to? WordPress contains no such thing.
If you’re not seeing the theme in your theme list, then you did not upload it to the right place or the theme is incomplete.
I don’t know about SmartFTP, I use Filezilla. Usage of that one was described on the page I gave you earlier:
