How to format text widget

    This would seem like an obvious question, but I’m not seeing any really serious info. I want to be able to apply html/css markup to a text widget. I’ve tried, but WP (3.3.2) seems to blow most of it off. For example I put this in a text widget:

    <br />
<br />
<h1>Hello World<h1>
<p>
Lot of text. Blah, blah, blah. . . .
</p>

    and it seems to recognize only the two line breaks. It blows off the <h1>. Is there a good tutorial somewhere? I see all sorts of what must be text widgets with wildly elaborate custom formatting.
