• Hi all,

Having problems with protecting a directory. I have set .htaccess etc on a directory which is for example /wp-content/files

This works ok and asks for a password if I type the full URL in a browser but if I select the files to download from my WP web site which are in this directory it just ignores it and lets anyone download the files without asking for the password.

I have researched .htaccess loads but it appears to be a wp issue.

    Any ideas guys,

    Thanks

    Dave

  • Can you explain that in more detail? I’m not sure what you mean by ‘if I select the files to download from my WP web site’, mostly.

Ok, I have a download directory within wordpress that has customer user manuals for the products we sell.

If we type the full url to the manuals we get the password box. However if we use WordPress and click on our downloads page we can access all of the files. I should say we are using wp-download manager plugin to control the downloads.

I could have possible set up a user within wp-download manager of “customer” but when they log in it takes them straight to a profile page so they could alter the password etc.

Very frustrating, even our hosting company is baffled as to why wordpress is overruling .htaccess security.

    Thanks for looking

Resolved this with trial and error. In wp-downloadmanager I needed to set the download option “download method” to “Redirect to file” instead of “Output to file” .

This the allowed the .htaccess file to work andf rthus ask for passwords.
