    Hi,

I am having a problem with this plugin. I got an original warning that W3 Total Cache was not written to the htaccess file. The warning said to unlock the htaccess file and redeploy W3 to it could write to the file. Once I tried to unlock it I got 403/permission error. After having my host reset permission I tried again, same thing. I reset and tried a 3rd time to remove Bulletproof using the instructions provided, but once I got to the stage of removing htaccess wp-admin I got the 403 again. It now seems I cannot touch that file in Bulletproof without my site going down. BTW, I did read your comments about cPanel Hotlinking tool. My provider has a hotlinking tool but I don’t believe it is cPanel, and I did not see a place where I could delete the code you mentioned.

So, is there a way for me to remove this without my site shutting down again.

    Thanks,

Not sure why unlocking the file would cause a 403 error. That would only occur when you try to lock your root .htaccess file on Hosts that do not allow you to lock the root .htaccess file

Use FTP or use your Host control panel and delete the Root .htaccess file and the wp-admin file. log into your site and delete the BPS plugin. Go to WordPress Settings >>> Permalinks and resave your permalinks.

You have no control over the cPanel HotLink Protection tool – it cannot be disabled – that is also broken. There is only way that works to block this broken cPanel tool from crashing your site – you have to lock your root .htaccess file with either 404 or 444 file permissions. After you have a new .htaccess file by going to the WordPress permalinks page and if the same problems start happening again then this is caused by the cPanel HotLink Protection tool since the root .htaccess file is not a BPS .htaccess file anymore and would now be a standard WordPress .htaccess file that is created by resaving your permalinks.

Actually my mistake. Yes, this is actually a very common problem and is most likely the very common cPanel Broken HotLink Protection tool problem. when you unlock your root .htaccess file the broken cPanel HotLink Protection tool will write invalid .htaccess code into your root .htaccess file and crash your website. This is a known problem that has been going on for over 10 years. ugh.

And a way to beat the broken cPanel HotLink Protection tool is to do these steps:

    1. Copy your W3TC .htaccess code to this BPS Custom Code text box: CUSTOM CODE TOP PHP/PHP.INI HANDLER/CACHE CODE: Add php.ini handler and/or plugin cache code here

    2. Click the Save Root Custom Code button

    3. Go to the Security Modes page, click the Create secure.htaccess File Automagic button and activate Root folder BulletProof Mode again.

This works because your root .htaccess file is only unlocked for less than a millisecond, which is not enough time for the broken cPanel HotLink Protection Tool to crash your website.

My provider helped and I got it removed finally. I am glad you mentioned re-saving permalinks, I couldn’t figure out why my pages weren’t loading. I’ll probably try BPS again when I have more time to figure out what went wrong.

    Thanks

There is another very common problem as well – WP flush_rewrite_rules problem. So if you do not have cPanel and the HotLink Protection tool then this is most likely the problem below.
