HTTP 500 error

    Our client was making some amends on his blog/site and suddenly it completely fell over. On Firefox we just have a blank screen and on IE we are given an http 500 error.

    This is what he says he did:

    • Dragged the “Recent items” widget onto the sidebar
    • Added code from here http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Function_Reference/the_excerpt to switch on excerpts by amending the code governing posts
    • Activated the thumbnails plug in
    • Added in the “Read more” link to the functions code, again following http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Function_Reference/the_excerpt

    As far as I can tell there isn’t anything there which should have killed the site but any ideas would be very much appreciated!
