HTTP Authentication of wp-admin

    I’m trying to password protect my wp-admin/ directory using HTTP authentication for an extra level of security. However, as soon as I put my .htaccess file into wp-admin/, WordPress feeds me its 404 page whenever I navigate to the wp-admin/ directory.

    I understand this is probably due to the Mod Rewrite rules WordPress uses, but I’m not knowlegable enough in mod rewrite to fix the problem.

    Does anyone have any advice?
