    I a m trying connecting the plugin on a 4.9.4 WordPress

After confirming the connection with a Google account i get i white page on Forefox or an Error 500 on Chrome.

Going back to WordPress dashboard i see this messages:

    Error connecting Site Kit
Unable to authenticate Site Kit, as no client credentials exist.

Your site may not be ready for Site Kit
Looks like you’re using a version of WordPress that’s older than 5.0. You can still install and use Site Kit, but some of its features might not work (for example translations).

    Hi @fgp,

Thanks for reaching out. As a 500 error can have numerous causes please share the following and we’d be happy to investigate this further:

    1. Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
    2. Is this the first time you’ve attempted Site Kit set up, or have you been able to complete setup successfully previously?
    3. Do you see any warnings or errors when checking your Site Health status (Tools > Site Health > Status), which differs from your Site Health information requested above? Such errors may include REST endpoint or cURL references, both of which can impact set up.

Once we have the above we can advise on this further, and suggest the most appropriate troubleshooting steps.

@fgp I can see that you already did provide your Site Health information. Many thanks.

From reviewing the details I suspect what may be contributing to your set up issues is that you have a secure site available (https://…), however you site URLs defined within your WordPress settings may be as insecure (http://…). This is also evident from checking your public rest endpoints.

Can you ensure both site URLs include https, within your WordPress general settings? After doing so please attempt Site Kit set up once more.

Many thanks for sharing. You can typically obtain it from within your WordPress control panel (Tools > Site Health > info > Copy site info to clipboard).

In your case, as you’re using an older version of WordPress this feature I believe you won’t see this feature. For that reason yes, you can try to use the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. Apologies for not mentioning this earlier.

Please do let me know if you are able to obtain your Site Health information.

In addition, regarding you not being able to change your WordPress site address to fully secure, this is likely a hosting related issue. Can you check with your hosting provider if it’s possible to mark your site as fully secure?

Thank you James. I am not an expert in HTTPS and security. Can you please give more details about what i should ask to my hosting provider?

    (@jamesosborne)

    Of course @fgp!

All you need to so is reach out to your hosting provider, and ask for assistance to ensure that your WordPress install is fully defined as secure (https). At present, as you’ve shown in your screenshot, this is not editable from within your WordPress instance itself.

If you want to also confirm your hosting provider, and not your CDN provider, I can also check and see if I spot anything.

So is it impossible to make Site Kit work on NON Https site?

I ask you that because in a few days or weeks we are migrating to a new hosting and platform but we would like to activate site kit on the old site.

    Hi @fgp,

You can use Site Kit on non secure sites, that’s no problem. Problems may arise if both the non secure and secure versions of your website are available at once. As Site Kit connects with one version of your site, any visits to the wp-admin panel from the non-connected version of your site may trigger the plugin to recognize a URL change.

Let me know how you get on with ensuring there is only one version of your site accessible.

James the site is down since 12 hours https://postimg.cc/RNnKRxyF

I don’t if and how is related to the site kit and health check plugin we installed.

    Can you give some advice?

    Hi @fgp,

There could be a number of causes for a 522 error. As it looks like you’re a Cloudflare user you can use the guide below to troubleshoot:
    https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003011431-Troubleshooting-Cloudflare-5XX-errors

I don’t if and how is related to the site kit and health check plugin we installed.

This is very unlikely to be the case. I suspect it’s more a server configuration resulting in this error. I would speak to your hosting provider if you’re unsure. I notice you didn’t state your hosting provider in the Site Health information report, so I can’t check for any possible Site Kit set up blocks also.

Let me know how you get on anyway, and inform me once your site is defined fully https.

Hi James Osborne, thank you again for your quick and clear reply, Our hosting is Digital Ocean and DNS are managed through Cloudfare. We investigated an we think the problem is related to a copyright infringement report.

No problem at all. Great to hear that you were able to determine a possible cause.

Once you have everything in order with your site, please do check with Digital Ocean to see if you can change your site to fully HTTPS in your WordPress general settings, before attempting Site Kit set up once more.

I can keep this support topic open for a few days anyway while you do so. Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.
