• Hi all,

Since updating a bunch of sites to WP 4.9.5, we’re seeing huge spikes in database usage which in turn triggers Pingdom alarms and sites go down for a few minutes.

We’ve gone through all the usual processes, disabling plugins, themes etc. but the problem persists.

It seems to be happening on different hosts. Our providers are trying to find the route cause, but so far everything points to the last core update (based on timings).

We’re looking at rolling back to a previous core install to see if problem goes away but this will take time before we can verify.

Has anyone else come across this?

    Thanks

    Phil

  • Hello, Phil, & welcome. What version of PHP are you running, if I might ask?

    Hi Jackie,

We’re running mostly on 7.2 these days.

    With thanks

Phil, have you checked your mysql logs/error logs to see what queries may be being launched?

1 thing I do pretty routinely w/WordPress is to disable wp-cron & run it using crontab instead. If that’s an option for you, it may prove helpful. Please let us know if you need instructions on how to do that. I find it keeps wp-cron from running more than it needs to, & that can help greatly.

    Thanks Jackie,

We’re checking the logs now to see what we can find.

We disable wp-cron and run it as a cron job on pretty much all of our WP installs and have done for a while.

Will let you know what, if anything we find.

    Thanks

    Phil
