    Hi,

thanks for your question, and sorry for the trouble.

Can you please post a link to the page with the table where this problem happens, so that I can take a direct look? Thanks!

    Regards,
    Tobias

    Hi Tobias,
You can see what I am trying to do here: http://www.ancientportsantiques.com/the-catalogue/complete-data-base/
I am still struggling with the ‘scroll’ function … reason why I include only 5 columns without links.
You can see my xlsx table here: http://www.ancientportsantiques.com/wp-content/uploads/GE/AncientPorts.xlsx
The table is 25 columns x 4130 lines: too big ??!
It includes over 7000 links: too many ??!

    Hi,

I now had a look at your Excel file. Unfortunately, I’ll have to disappoint you.
TablePress can not directly import links from an Excel file, as those use a different technical structure. TablePress however requires links to be HTML code :-/
Now, there are some ways to convert this, e.g. with VB macros in Excel, but I don’t think that this will be a solution for this table, due to it’s structure of worksheets.

Also, the size might indeed be a concern, as showing a large table like this would most likely have drawbacks, like a very slow “Edit” screen. For tables of this size, I therefore recommend using a native DB solution, e.g. based on custom PHP/mySQL code.

    Hi Tobias,
I understand that links must be written down explicitly in the table. Embedded links are not recognized by your ‘Automatic URL conversion’ extension. C’est dommage ! but I can live with that.
Thanks for all your good help.

    Hi,

if it’s plain URLs, those should actually be recognized…
Did you add the necessary Shortcode parameters for the Extension?

    Hi,
    This is what I added:
    [table id=1 responsive=collapse responsive_breakpoint=phone automatic_url_conversion=true automatic_url_conversion_new_window=true automatic_url_conversion_rel_nofollow=true /]

    Hi Arthur,

after taking another look, the URLs in the big table on your link from above are actually clickable, i.e. the Extension has converted them successfully. Can you confirm?

    Tobias

    Hi Tobias,
I confirm that links with full URL are clickable. OK.
But embedded links (eg those in DOC1_Papers in col 9) are not clickable.

    Hi Arthur,

yes, that’s expected then. The Extension converts all URLs to clickable links.
The embedded links suffer from that import issue with the different link format in Excel. Making those clickable would have to be done in Excel, e.g. by using a macro to convert them to HTML code there. A user has shared his solution at http://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/hyperlinks-in-cells?replies=6#post-4710730 Maybe that’s helpful here as well.

    Hi,
I understand, but I do not wish to write down the full URL in my table as this takes too much cell space. I prefer keeping the URL hidden behind a shorter text. This is also more clear for the reader. But I accept that this is my own choice!
I hope you will find a way to crack this problem some day. Let me know…

    Hi Arthur,

note that you can still have such embedded links, of course! It’s just not directly possible to import them from Excel.
Using the “Insert Link” button, which asks you for the URLs and the desired link text, will give you the necessary code for this.

    Regards,
    Tobias

    Hi Tobias.
Thank you very much for the plugin. It’s a shame (to me) that you can not directly import an excel table with text that has a hyperlink below. As it happened to “arthurdegraauw” I also prefer that the user can see a text instead of a “horrifying” URL.
Of course, you can make one by one in each cell, using the “Insert Link” button but this way is very laborious.
Well, I will do this, because I only have 220 cells
Again, thank you very much for the plugin !!!
If someday could be done directly, I would like to know;-))

    And Regards, of course 😉

    Hi,

yeah, it’s sad that this isn’t possible, but unfortunately, I don’t see an easy way for implementing this 🙁

Maybe the idea with the Excel macro in the link in my previous post would be an option for you?

    Regards,
    Tobias

    Hi Tobias
I’ve done several tests, but ultimately did not serve me. I have to go into each cell and insert the URL and place text over.
Thank you very much for your attention and for the quick response.
    😉

    Regards,
    Aitor
