This is already checked..
The thumbnail size has to be set to “Specified width and height”. Set the desired width, omit the height and save the widget. The images should be in the set width and automatic height.

For a Post, is the Thumbnail supposed to be the user’s profile pic (if not specifying Featured Image, or first image, etc)?
Not supposed but you can set a default pic and take the address of the user’s pic. But that would show only this user, even the post was written by another user. Where and how do you define user’s profile pics without any plugin?
