Unfortunately, spam registrations are on the rise. They register but do not activate. There are others who are not spam, but for whatever reason they never activate their account. Either way, they need clearing.

    (1) How do I identify non-activated users in the database? What field(s) give conclusive evidence that they are not activated?

    (2) What method can I use to isolate and remove them as users?

I have looked in the database, but the nearest I could find was a default_password_nag, but I have two users who are clearly customers having made multiple purchases, and that can only be done logged-in. So that field is not definitive. I can’t see any other, but the activation process must change something definitive.

airdrummer, that would be a great option, but I cannot see such an option. Where should it be?

on the wordpress user admin screen where it lists all the users, there is a list of clickable links:

    Users Add UserFilter users list

    All (148) | Administrator (2) | Editor (3) | Author (5) | Contributor (3) | Subscriber (135) | Activated (148) | Pending Activation (0) | Deactivated (0)

    click pending activation

I do not have this. Is it possible you have a plugin which is providing this functionality?

There are two possibilities in the plugin:

    • Moderated registration
    • User confirmation

Depending on which option you’re using (and referring to), the terms will be slightly different as these are not interchangeable.

Moderated registration is when the user requires admin approval. In this case, there will be a link in the Users > All Users filter links at the top that say “Activated”, “Pending Activation”, and “Deactivated”

User confirmation requires a user to validate their email. Based on the wording of your initial post, I think this may be what you’re using (“they never activate their account”). In this case, there will be links in the Users All Users filter links that say “Confirmed” and “Not Confirmed”. Select the “Not Confirmed” link to filter the view to show only users who have not confirmed.

Note users can be manually set as confirmed and unconfirmed by the admin in this screen, as well as deleted – whichever instance applies to the users or set of users.

I see my point of confusion, and apologies to @airdrummer . I have never had the wp-members option for user confirmation turned on because WordPress by default sends an email (kind of) to this effect. I see that wp-members actually allows us to manage activations, whereas WordPress by default offers us no such help. I have managed to isolate the users I needed to, in order to deal with my current situation, and will get wp-members user confirmation in place soon in order to handle it properly into the future. Thanks, @cbutlerjr and @airdrummer .
