if/then/else statement based on templates?

does anyone know if there’s some way to fire an if/than/else php statement that picks up a static page’s template? i want to have an image in my sidebar that rotates based upon the template for the static page.

i spent three weeks to build a navigation bar that works similar to the OakTree plugin and i just don’t have the patience to start on something like this. hopefully somebody can help me cut the fat.
