    Hi all

My blog, katiejanecollins.co.uk, is currently at 1,969.16 MB total disk space used. I have been told this is a lot, and that my images are a problem.

Recently I have been saving them for web at 1500 x 1000 px, but WordPress seems to be resizing them to 1170 x 780 px, for some reason.

I need to reduce the size of my blog so I have downloaded WP SMUSH to help, though I’m not sure if it’s worth doing.

1: As my photos on my blog range from a number of sizes, is this plugin a good idea? They have got far bigger over the years.

2: Do I need to turn on Preserve image EXIF data?

3: What am I best to put into the Resize original images section?

4: Some images are too big to resize (I tested a few), how do I get around this?

    Any help appreciated, thanks.

    Katie.

  • Hi Katie,

I believe it is just the themes styling that is resizing the images on the page to 1170 x 780 px.
Due to this, I would recommend not to resize the original images to any less then this as the images may be stretched.

However you could use the lossless compression.
    Hope this helps.

    Josh.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to set the plug in to resize them to 1500 x 1000, but it said “Currently, your largest thumbnail size is set at 1600px wide x 9999px high. Anything above 2048px in width or height is huge and not recommended.” So now I’m confused!

    Hi @katie-jane-collins,

WordPress doesn’t modifies the original image, unless it’s your theme/plugin that’s filtering it out.

As my photos on my blog range from a number of sizes, is this plugin a good idea? They have got far bigger over the years.

That’s ok, try to run the Bulk Smush once, and see if majority of your images gets optimised. The free version has a limit on image size of 1Mb. So if the images are over 1Mb in size, it’ll be skipped.

Do I need to turn on Preserve image EXIF data?

Only if it’s a photo blog and you watermark/copyright your images, else you can keep it off to get better optimisation.

What am I best to put into the Resize original images section

As you said 1500 x 1000 px is the max image size you use, you can put on the same numbers in resize settings, so in case a image is bigger than that, WP Smush will take care of it.

Some images are too big to resize (I tested a few), how do I get around this?

You can checkout the WP Smush Pro, in case you’ve doubts regarding that, feel free to contact via the contact form in here: https://premium.wpmudev.org/contact

I hope that explains most of your concerns, in case there is something else, feel free to post back.

    Cheers, Umesh

Thank you for your reply that’s really helpful. The only thing is as I mentioned I am way to set it to 1500 x 1000 as it says that the post-thumbnail is 1600 x 9999. I don’t know what the post-thumbnail is as that height is huge?

Also I forgot to ask, can you ‘un-Smush’ if it all goes wrong!?

    @katie-jane-collins,

Shouldn’t be a issue in setting it to 1500 x 1000, just to be sure, give it a check that you aren’t embedding post-thumbnail in your theme or plugin.

Also I forgot to ask, can you ‘un-Smush’ if it all goes wrong!?

You’d be able to restore the most of the images, with few exceptions.

WP Smush doesn’t optimises the original image ( Full Size ) by default, unless large size is not created. Ref: https://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Post_Thumbnails#Thumbnail_Sizes. Large size might not be created, if the original image is of similar/smaller dimension as the Large size.

So, if for some of the images, large size is absent, the original image is optimised as well and as a result you won’t be able to un-smush those. ( Pro version does have a backup and restore option, that’d double the space though )

For resizing, once image is resized, you can’t undo it by default. But, there is a option to enable the backup using filter wp_smush_resize_create_backup.

If you return true to above filter, WP Smush won’t delete the original image, and later if for some reason you want to revert to original image, you’d be able to do that. Just to mention, it’ll take a lot of space on your hosting since both the images will be kept in directory.

Or the shortest possible way is to take complete backup of your WordPress installation, Optimise all the images, if you have any issues, you can directly restore the installation to existing backup.

    Cheers
