I’ve asked the same and so far no answer. You could just shrink the image in an image editor beforehand but I think it maintains better quality on mobile if you do it the way we’re trying to do it.
Until a better solution is found I just did what you’re not supposed to do and modified the actual theme. I went into inc/css/ and modified the particular css of my theme (blue.css) and removed the width:auto/9 line. Of course I’m guessing it was there for a reason so I wonder if a problem will now pop up elsewhere.
I have edited the css file for the theme which I am using and still doesn’t seem to apply. I think until I manage to find a better solution I will just have to edit all the images and re-upload (hopefully that works)! Thanks!
You should not be modifying theme files – all of your changes will be lost when the theme is updated.
Have you checked that your mark-up and CSS is valid – IE hates invalid code.
Also, what version of IE are you talking about? If 10, see:

I have the same issue of images not showing up at all in IE, I haven’t modified the theme or anything, just trying to use as is. What is the fix?
It isn’t like you can tell someone to clear their cookies so they can see your website like it should be seen, that “fix” doesn’t work anyways.
Ideas?
Thanks.
