image with text, and button or link when hovering

Hello all,
I have been spending so much time, trying to find the right theme / template.
and I’m confused with all the choices there are!
is it a lightbox i need? or is it a mosaic…

All I want to accomplish, is to have a grid of images,
that resizes based upon window size / mobile,

with a text and button (or a simple link), that pops on top of the image when you hover over it. It seems the default wordpress feature can do it, but there’s only 1 image, 1 row. I can’t seem to make a grid out of several images, or be responsive.

the current plugin I use makes it a bit too slow for me, and i’m not able to link directly to each of the images on the page.

so if anyone knows of a good theme, I would appreciate it.
