Images randomly missing from galleries

I’ve had this issue for several months now, so it doesn’t appear to be related to any specific version of WP, Foo Gallery or any other plugins I use.
At random, some or even all photos from some galleries don’t load thumbnails and aren’t clickable. Clearing thumbnails cache in the gallery settings doesn’t fix it, but strangely when I edit the gallery and click UPDATE without actually making any changes at all, it works fine again.
Few weeks ago it happened to almost all my galleries for no apparent reason, all I did to resolve it was to edit every single one and click the UPDATE button.
