Import fail 502 – no log

I have been trying to import from 50-800 posts, but they won’t complete on my server. The timer keeps going but the status bar gets stuck anywhere between 0% and 95%. Some of the imports do succeed in getting into the database before the process gets stuck. After about an hour, the page gets a 502 error in a modal and the site is frozen until the process can be stopped server side.
The server CPU is getting pegged (maxed out) and is overwhelmed with requests from a bot called Gofeed making requests to an IP address in Prague. This in turn causes 499 errors as the server attempts to shut down the bot making so many requests.
Because the process never completes, I can see the log but no log file gets written to the server with any more information. The log does not display any errors while it runs on the page.
Please advise what can be done, as this error makes your plugin unusable for actual content migration on my server.
