Improve home slideshow

I’d like some ideas as to how to improve the home page slideshow here: http://www.marymeyer.com

Basically I’m wondering how to make the transitions smoother, and reduce load time, and anything else that would make it look better.

It’s run off of a 1 column gallery of 14 images in the home page.
