include/exclude subcategories

there are instances in which i want the plugin to list posts from the category i point it to, and every subcategory under it, which might be too many to add them in the shortcode.
(i thought this was the default option, but as of the 0.54 update it seems to not be doing this anymore).
at the same time, there are also instances in which i want the plugin to list posts from just the parent category i point it to, and NOT list anything from the subcategories. is there any way to toggle this through parameters?
