• When I try to update to WordPress 6.8, I get the message: “The update cannot be installed because some files could not be copied. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-admin/includes/update-core.php.”

I searched the Forums for answers and found several threads that cover this. The top recommendation seems to be to try a Manual Update — which seems like a relative pain. Before I go down that road, can anyone explain what likely happened here?

I have had this blog for something like 20 years…and have never had this problem. I did not nothing unusual today that might trigger it. Why has this happened? And is there no simple fix other than a manual update?

The message already says what the cause is: Permissions in the file system are not correct. You would have to check these and adjust them if necessary. Here is an article with the basic procedure for this: https://developer.ww.wp.xz.cn/advanced-administration/server/file-permissions/ – if you have any questions, it is best to contact your hoster’s support, as they provide you with this system with these permissions.

Yes, I get it. I was asking if why — completely out of nowhere and after so many years — this problem should suddenly pop up. What are the general reasons this might happen?

As threadi suggested in his reply, contact your hosting provider support and ask if they made any changes to server settings at their end.

I manage a website for a friend and this same issue has suddenly occurred on his WordPress installation when trying to update to 6.8. I tried a manually upgrade and about 100 files in the wp-admin/includes folder could not be copied. Despite that, the site now believes that it’s fully updated to 6.8 and appears to be functioning as usual. However if I try to update translations or the WordPress included themes it still triggers the error. All of the errors reference the code in this file: “/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 173

I’m also curious as to why this suddenly happened out of the blue.

@madfatter: according to the forum guidelines please create your own topic for your own issue: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/#new-topic-0

Sorry, I thought mfiman and I were experiencing the same issue as they occurred at the same time, with the same update and the same error so I was adding more information to the topic having gone to the next step of trying a manual update. I’ll start a new topic.
