• Please help. My blog was recently hacked with a virus. I installers a virus program and out flagged up the index files on my blog. I moved the files to a new folder to clean them but for some reason they were deleted instead of moved. now obviously these site isn’t working. Is rh12 a way to rebuild the index files or reinstall WordPress without listing my content. My hosts were meant to be keeping backups but they don’t have one! Yes I know I should have one….

    All help is gratefully received.

  • Hi drew10. Most WordPress index files are usually core index files or theme files. If you need to restore WordPress index files, you should be able to either:

    1. download to your local machine the version of WordPress you’re using. Then, any index.php file you think is hacked, restore it from the default files you just downloaded.

    2. if you theme was hacked, delete your theme and then attempt to reinstall it.

    Hi Brad,

Thanks for the help. I have added the inde3x files as you suggested but now I am only getting a blank page on my site. I am going to try to add the theme again although if I am honest this is a little alien to me.

    Thanks,

    Drew

Hi Drew. If you’re getting a blank page, most likely it is an error message in disguise. You can edit your wp-config file to show any error messages, and that will help debug the issue:

    http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Editing_wp-config.php#Debug
    define('WP_DEBUG', true);

Are you confident that you put the correct files in the correct folders?

I have managed to get the site back up but I am convinced there is a virus on the site and I don’t know how to get rid it. Can any of you guys help me out?

I scanned your code, and at first glance I didn’t see anything that looks like a virus / hack. What pages / why do you think your site is hacked?

I deleted all the redundant themes and my active theme yesterday and also reinstalled my active theme. I think/hope that might have done it. If you could have another look and see if it is still getting the virus warnings I would appreciate it.

Thanks for all the good advice!

Hi kmessinger. I’m not very familiar with the data on this page:

    http://www.avgthreatlabs.com/sitereports/domain/game4anything.com#analytics

It does not appear that it actually shows the problematic link? Is this correct, or am I just not seeing it?

Hi drew10. It sounds like the issue has been resolved! When I check out the AVG link from above, I see this message:

No potential threats have been detected on this site for 7 days. However, potential threats appeared at some point during the last 30 days. (updated Nov 16, 2011 23:59 GMT)

It does not appear that it actually shows the problematic link? Is this correct, or am I just not seeing it?

I am not seeing it either. According to their own how to read a report info there is supposed to be a “linked sites” entry. I don’t see it. This is the first time I have been to that site and it is a little disappointing.
