Is there a way to set up Infinite Scroll to load newer posts when scrolling up? If a user clicks on a post, and then goes back to the listing page, they can only go as far up as the first post on the paginated listing page they came from.

Infinite Scroll won’t be triggered when scrolling up.

You can, however, work around this issue by forcing Jetpack not to append page numbers to the end of the URL.
You can follow the instructions here to learn how to do so.
