Infinite Scroll isn’t supported on the portfolio custom post type, only on blog posts.
…but when I first installed it, it worked. is that function to be implemented?

There aren’t any plans to bring infinite scroll to portfolio items in Espied.
If you’d like to increase the number of portfolio items that can be accessed directly from the portfolio page, then navigate to Settings > Writing and toggle the option next to “Portfolio pages display at most.”
If that doesn’t match up to what you’re after then perhaps give the repository a search for a plugin that’s capable of bringing infinite scroll to custom post types. I did a quick search and found the following that may work:
