Inserting data to WP from external feed

I have an external xml feed with elements that I want to insert into the WP database. The idea is to let the feed do the “posting” and let the admin system be more of an overview and a tool to change the posts. I want to insert the DOMs as meta data in the DB and match those with appropriate custom fields. The wanted effect is that the user can see what the feed has “posted”, and make changes or add stuff if needed.

I guess this is doable via an SQL-query but I wanted some input before I try it out. Is this a big no-no or something that could actually work?
