Instead of listing the fields created in Name Directory, maybe the plugin could show the users from WP’s own database?

Ah I see what you mean. Do you want to use it as a kind of author-index? At the moment, I can’t help you with that because this requires a very different database structure.
More like a Phone or adress book.

I´m not sure, but I bet there are other plugins that do exactly what you want.
If you want you can use my source code to create a little something like that yourself. You can query the wp_user-table if you like
The frontend layout of your plugin just rocks and fits my needs in so many ways, that other plugins should be shamefull 😀
