Invalid User

I have a registered user who created a username with special characters, namely the > sign. When I try to change the Role for this user, the Edit function gives me an error:

ERROR: This username is invalid. Please enter a valid username.

Of course, there is no editing of the username so I’m not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.
