You may want to elaborate on the idea of “joining a blog”. What does that mean?

The blog is being run for local news. I would like to get a bunch of news authors together to publish their news on my site. Some people will find the site and sign themselves up (there is an invite to join in the sidebar.). But I would like to invite a few people via email. Obviously I could write an email and invite them to come over and sign up. But in blogger there is a standard invite where you input the persons email address and blogger does the rest on your behalf – ie it emails the person, says “you have been invited to contribute to *******” And gives the ability to accept or not by clicking a link in the email. If the person accepts blogger then signs them up without them having to do anything else.
I would like this to happen in wordpress
