I updated the plugin to the latest version v.2.8.7.
I am afraid the issue still persists.
A new order just came in and the invoice number is still blank. When I click on download button, this message shows up again: Invoice number has not been generated yet. Do you want to manually generate one?

Thanks for sharing the information. Please make sure that you have chosen your desired status on “Generate invoice for order statuses” option located on the invoice general settings page (refer screenshot). Go through this article for a better understanding.

I checked the “Generate invoice for order statuses” option and it was set to “Completed”.
I changed it to “Processing” and now everything is working fine.

We have also suddenly experienced this issue. I changed to “Processing” and the issue did not resolve.
I was curious if this was happening to others and if there was any advancement in advice for this issue.

Could you please confirm that the order status of the orders (WooCommerce > Orders) for which the invoice number is not generated is the same as that of the chosen status (ie, processing) in the plugin settings?
Also, kindly go through this article to verify the plugin settings.
