    Hi there,

we have a really annoying problem with our WooCommerce setup: Every time I load the media browser in the backend of our WordPress installation I get blocked from our server duo to security reasons.

I just talked to the provider who explained, that loading images from the subdirectory „woocommerce/upload“ causes 403 errors that (in total) lead to the blocking of my IP address. I attach a screenshot from the developer console that shows the 403 errors (red).

He added that there is an entry in the .htaccess that says every access on the aforementioned subdirectory is forbidden. So it actually works as it should work… but we don’t understand why this configuration could be wanted, since it locks us out from our own backend and makes it unusable.

Has anybody an idea and can help us out?

    Thanks and best regards,
    Fabian

    Hello @fabianfw,

So it actually works as it should work… but we don’t understand why this configuration could be wanted, since it locks us out from our own backend and makes it unusable.

I will recommend getting in touch with your host about this as it has to do with the server configuration. Generally speaking, you’ll need to protect that file if you sell digital products that will be downloaded from the mentioned directory.

More information about handling digital products can be found here: https://woocommerce.com/document/digital-downloadable-product-handling/

    Cheers!

    Hi @babylon1999 ,

thanks for your response and the explanation – I’m getting to understand better bit by bit.

The host said, they could not help (except deactivating the security measures completely which is no serious option), because the server reacts correctly by triggering a 403 error since the htaccess forces to this. They said, the problem has to be solved within the WP/WC-configurations.

Any further ideas to solve it?

    Thanks & best regards,
    Fabian

    Howdy @fabianfw

I understand your frustration. Kindly note that this is not an issue related with the core WooCommerce plugin, but rather with the server configuration, instead.

To that end, feel free to check out some hosting provider alternatives, and the WooCommerce Server Recommendations. You should also check WordPress requirements.

Alternatively, you might want to try with a local environment, with a tool like Local or DevKinsta, and see if the issue persists.

I trust that points you in the right direction, but if you have more questions, let us know. We’re happy to help.
