• Most of the places I have read say that xmlrpc.php should be turned off as a security measure. I followed this link. But I want to make sure if I disable xmlrpc.php, will that affect wordpress automatic pinging?

Goodness no, disabling xmlrpc.php is such an antiquated security philosophy. The file and infrastructure has been so hardened over the years (the document you link to is almost 2 years old) it’s just as secure as the password of your user account.

If you disable xmlrpc.php it will actually block lots of useful functionality, including the ability to use blogging apps (mobile and desktop) and third-party services like Jetpack.

Instead of disabling xmlrpc.php (don’t), you may want to implement some (if not all) of the actual recommended security measures.
