Have you tried:
- flushing any caching plugins you might be running, as well as server and/or browser caches.
- deactivating all plugins (yes, all) to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s). If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin (read “How to deactivate all plugins when you can’t log in to wp-admin” if you need help). Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder. The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old
- switching to the Twenty Sixteen theme to rule out any theme-specific problems. If you can’t log in to change themes, you can remove the theme folders via FTP so the only one is
twentyfourteen. That will force your site to use it.
- manually upgrading. When all else fails, download a fresh copy of the latest.zip file of WP (top right on this page) to your computer, and use that to copy up. You may need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders on your server. Read the Manual Update directions first.
I only had web access. I’ve never connected direct to the server or via FTP.
Ipstenu’s advise is good to follow. All those things can help. Since you can’t access the site through the admin login, I would say you are probably going to need to access via FTP.
The error message looks to be talking about a specific plugin “custom-taxonomy-sort”. Renaming that folder will deactivate that plugin and you might be back in business.
Here is a thread talking about that plugin and your specific error.

Hope that helps a bit.
Hi, I have exactly the same problem! Were you able to solve it via FTP? I don’t have access to WP via web anymore after the update… ouch
SOLVED! THANK YOU Ipstenu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Disabling plugins via FTP fixed the error.
The problem was one of my plugins (Custom Taxonomy Sort), I’m looking for a similar option since it doesn’t let me re-activate it.
Can’t thank you enough Ipstenu
Oh no! First time in my life I have this problem. With no backup – Fatal error when updating WordPress 🙁
http://jaskowazagroda.pl
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare update_termmeta_cache() (previously declared in /wordpress/wp-includes/taxonomy.php:1690) in /wordpress/wp-content/plugins/custom-taxonomy-sort/includes/simple-term-meta.php on line 95
I try to desactivate plugins but I don’t have acces to them in SQL admin panel 🙁 I don’t see this option!
I have this:

And no acces to site via www.
Access your site through FTP, and go to the folder:
html / wp-content / plugins / and rename the folder “custom-taxonomy-sort” to “temp_custom-taxonomy-sort”. When you re-load your admin console or website, you should now be able to see it without the error.
