We are using ColorMag (free version) for a site. We imported the demo data and set up the theme settings in the customizer. We want to make some minor layout changes to some of theme files but we don’t want to edit the theme files directly because the changes would be overwritten by theme updates. We tried to use the ColorMag Child Theme provided by ThemeGrill. When we activate the child theme, it breaks the layout we had set up in the theme settings and the demo data seems to disappear. Reactivating the original theme restores the demo data and our layout.

Why does the child theme behave this way with the parent theme? I should be able to use the child theme to make edits to the child theme files without it breaking the layout and having to re-import the demo data again. I’ve used child themes on other themes and they don’t do anything to affect the demo data or the layout from the parent theme. I’d like to have a solution otherwise I will need to switch to another theme. Thank you.

  • Hi @midihead,

Can you please use a child theme first and then import demo data after using it, and check?

    Thanks and Regard,

I was able to use the Customizer Export/Import plugin to export the Customizer settings from the parent theme and then re-import the settings after activating the Child Theme. This restored my layout as it should be. With the child theme active, I can now edit the template files in the child theme. Thank you.

    Hi @midihead,

Glad to hear that your issue has been resolved. Do let us know if you have any further queries regarding our theme.

    Thanks.
