javascript error in scripts.js

hi there,
i reviewed your faq’s and came to the conclusion that there is a conflict with javascript. the error i am getting is:

TypeError: $form is undefined
var $responseOutput = $form.find(‘div.wpcf7-response-output’);

which is in the contact-form-7/includes/js/scripts.js?ver=4.0 file.

any chance you can help me resolve this? my form is submitting, but loading just rotates and rotates and i am not getting the validation messages.
