An issue where the inline responses don’t seem to be appearing with the plugin form is usually due to some Javascript conflicts, perhaps with other plugins. Some threads with similar issues:

Usually the best way to avoid this would be to uncheck the “Use Javascript Support?” option under “List Options” on the plugin settings page, or to use an alternate plugin or the MailChimp embed form code to bypass this altogether.
