I am the webmaster for several community websites which are all part of the same organisation and so all use the same WordPress identity, I have Jetpack on each of them.
The latest website to be created shows an error message when I connect it to WordPress, it says something has gone wrong and gives me a ‘try again’ button. IfI click that then it takes me through to the Jetpack page to choose a plan. I choose the free plan and my dashboard tells me I am connected.
    So far, so good.
If I then go to settings and try to enable an option, like Publicize, I again receive the error message and when I ‘try again’ I receive a pop up saying I’m connected but I don’t get taken to WordPress.com to complete the set up.

If I open wordpress.com in a new window I don’t have to sign in so the connection has obviously succeeded somehow but the website does not appear in my list of connected sites so I can’t do anything with it from there either.

I have disabled all plugins except Jetpack and that changes nothing. I have left it 24 hours in case it was a temporary glitch but it remains the same.

I have disconnected and reconnected Jetpack many times, but the sequence doesn’t vary. I have screenshots detailing this.

I need to be able to use Publicize and would like to use other things too. Any help would be gratefully received.

    Mary

    Hi Mary,

From your message, it looks like Jetpack is currently connected with your site but not with your WordPress.com account. Publicize feature need connection to WordPress.com. Jetpack will work even without connecting it with a WordPress.com account but only with limited features.

More info can be found here: https://jetpack.com/support/why-the-wordpress-com-connection-is-important-for-jetpack

In order to connect Jetpack with your WordPress.com account, please go to Jetpack > Dashboard in the WP-Admin area, scroll down to Connections, and click Connect your WordPress.com account.

Let me know how it went!

If you get any issues after connecting to WordPress.com, we can further investigate this, but we will need your site URL.

If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via this contact form. If you choose to reach out directly, please include a link to this thread.

    Hi Animesh,
Yes that is exactly the problem!
But as I said I have been to settings> Publicize and tried to connect but get the message that ‘something went wrong’ and the ‘try again’ button. It will not connect to wordpress.com.

I have successfully connected and publicized on other sites so know how it shoulf work but it is not doing so.

I ran the online debugger for Jetpack and it says everything is ok.

    To recap:
When I try to activate Publicize I get an error message but if I use the ‘try again’ button it tells me it has connected to WordPress.com but it hasn’t.

If I refresh the screen I am taken back to start again trying to connect.

If I go to wordpress.com my site does not appear in the list of my sites. However, very oddly, I am already logged into wordpress.com so Jetpack must have connected somehow.

Today’s update of Jetpack has not solved the problem.

    Hello @marywt,

Thanks for the follow-up and the recap. Have you tried what Animseh suggested earlier? I trust it didn’t work as you shared the screenshots.

I checked your account and I was able to see what you mean. The trouble I suspect is happening here is that the system is somehow “confused” as you managed to connect Jetpack by using a WordPress.com userless connection, then now we need to tie a WordPress.com account to enable the Publicize features.

Could you try the login and connection steps from very scratch by using a different web browser? This way, you can log in to WordPress.com by using the evgs2018 account, then connect Jetpack from your wp-admin, always by using the vgs2018 account.

Let’s see how it goes and what you find out, and we’ll take it from there.

Look forward to your reply, and thanks in advance for your cooperation in sorting that out with us!

    Hi Stef,
    Thanks for the quick response.

As I said, if I try going through the Publicize steps, use ‘try again’ and get the message shown on the link with the little green flag saying I am successful AND then go to wordpress.com I am already signed in so something is connecting somehow.

My host is Ionos and they put an ‘assistant’ on which I usually disable for sites. I have tried connecting with it enabled and it makes no difference. It is not a plugin conflict as I have disabled them all to no avail.

I did as you suggested and used Chrome instead of Firefox and have been successful.

When I look at the site in Firefox it shows that I am connected now, so everything is fine as far as I am concerned but it looks as though you have a problem seeing that firefox is so popular.

If there is anything I can do to help please let me know.

Can you please remove my wordpress account name from the post above, I will be taking down the page with the pictures soon so if you need to see them again I’ll send them privately.

Thanks very much for the help, Mary

    Hi Mary

Glad to hear that using Chrome was successful.

We haven’t been able to reproduce this issue while testing in Firefox, but we’ll keep an eye out for any similar reports in case there’s something we need to investigate further.
