    Wow!

After hours and hours of turning this plugin and that off and then on to find out why I was getting comment notifications from my blog but the comments weren’t in the moderation panel, it turned out Jetpack was the issue. They were really gone — not even in wp_comments! Jetpack was just disappearing them.

That lead to hours and hours of turning on and off various Jetpack features. At the end of the day, it’s obvious that the comment feature would be the culprit. And so it was.

But I still can’t believe it. Jetpack was eating comments held for moderation on a current level of WordPress running an unmodified version of TwentySixteen.

Just a warning to others: if you aren’t getting comments and you’re running Jetpack now you know why.

I can’t seem to be able to reproduce the issue on my end. Could you let me know what other plugins are currently active on your site? Do you happen to use any other comment, anti-spam, or Captcha plugins?

If so, it might be worth trying to deactivate them, one at a time, and activate the Comments module back to see if the problem is linked to a conflict with another plugin.

Let me know what you find!

    Hello,

Here’s a link to the plugins installed on my blog.

But this isn’t the problem; Jetpack is. I disabled all plugins but the disappearing comments continued to disappear. Then, I started disabling Jetpack features — and I think it was Photon that, once disabled, fixed the problem.

    Thx.

Your captcha plugin could definitely be causing conflicts with Jetpack’s Comment form. Photon, on the other hand, doesn’t interact with the comment form, or submitting comments.

Could you give it another try, by deactivating your Captcha plugin?

Let me know how it goes.

Sorry, I’m not deactivating a plugin that has worked reliably for me for years, especially when it’s binary that when a Jetpack feature (I am unsure of which one) is on, comments disappear; when it’s off, they work fine. Plus, I’ve already deactivated ALL my plugins except for Jetpack, entered a comment and watched it disappear.

While I’d expect other plugins to point fingers, I’m surprised that the Jetpack devs (who have delivered so much value to WordPress) do it.

As I mentioned earlier, this is most likely caused by a conflict between Jetpack’s Comment form and your Captcha plugin. To deactivate that module, you can go to Jetpack > Settings and click on deactivate next to the Comments module.

While I’d expect other plugins to point fingers, I’m surprised that the Jetpack devs (who have delivered so much value to WordPress) do it.

Just to be clear, I’m not pointing fingers at anyone. The problem is most likely on our end. We know of some conflicts between Jetpack’s Comments module and some other comment, anti spam, and captcha plugins. These conflicts are highlighted here:
    https://jetpack.com/support/getting-started-with-jetpack/known-issues/

I am not aware of any conflicts with the NOCAPTCHA reCAPTCHA plugin, but it seemed to be the most likely to be conflicting with Jetpack Comments. Indeed, as Jetpack’s Comment form is added via an iFrame, it’s usually not compatible with other plugins hooking into the comment form using built-in WordPress filters. We haven’t found a way to work around this yet, and until we find a fix, we can only suggest that you deactivate Jetpack’s Comments module when you already run another plugin that conflicts with the module.

But before I suggest this option, it would be nice to be sure that it is indeed the plugin that conflicted with Jetpack Comments πŸ™‚

I’ve already deactivated ALL my plugins except for Jetpack, entered a comment and watched it disappear.

That means the problem might not be linked to conflicts between Jetpack Comments and the reCAPTCHA plugin after all. Unfortunately I can’t reproduce either. Does it happen every time you publish a comment? Does this happen when you deactivate the Comments module?

    Thanks!

I have had the same problem at by blog :

    http://lawforall.in

and disabling Jetpack’s comments feature seems to have sorted it.

Sorry don’t have time to explore further – just relieved that for the time being this seems to be over. Keeping it here to help others who might chance along …

@newest You seem to be using another plugin, OneAll Social Login, to add social buttons to the comment form. It may be what’s conflicting with Jetpack’s Comment form module.

However, since you request all your readers to be logged in to leave a comment, Jetpack’s Comment form module isn’t too useful for you; the Social options Jetpack’s Comment form offers aren’t available to logged in users since those users are already logged in. You could consequently leave the module deactivated on your site.

    Thanks much @jeherve
