I have just tried to update Jetpack to v3.5.3 via the updates panel inside WordPress. It got stuck, and would not proceed further. I deleted the Jetpack folder via FTP (as my site was in maintenance mode) and then tried to reinstall via the “Add Plugins” screen. This informed me that it could not install Jetpack as it was already present.
I checked via my FTP connection and there is no Jetpack folder.
I attempted to upload Jetpack as a zip file, with the same result. Again, there is no Jetpack folder.
I have also checked in the Installed Plugins page, and there is no Jetpack there either.

This is the second time this has happened – at the last update I simply continued to try both methods of installing the plugin and one eventually worked. At some point, Jetpack appeared in the Installed Plugins screen even though it had said it had not been installed…

Can you tell me what is causing this error? Is it a conflict with a plugin I am already using?

I am currently using WordPress 4.2.1
My plugins are: Access Monitor, Add Meta Tags, Akismet, Blog in Blog, cookie-cat, Display Posts Shortcode, Google Analytics by Yoast, Huge IT Image Gallery, Huge IT Portfolio Gallery, Ninja Forms, oik-privacy-policy, oik-base-plugin, Widget CSS Classes, Wistia WordPress Plugin, Wordfence Security, WP Accessibility, WP Display Header and XML Sitemaps.

Could you contact your hosting provider, and ask them to take a look at your plugins folder to make sure there is jetpack folder left there?

Let me know how it goes.

    Hi,
What I’ve found is that, when I looked once more at the folders, Jetpack had reappeared. I deleted that, same result as last time.

I’ve been looking at my php version which is 5.2.17 (rather than the recommended 5.2.4 minimum) – could this be the cause of the issue?

(I administer the website for someone else who owns the account, making it somewhat difficult to contact my webhost – so I’m trying to do what I can without/before contacting them!)

It could be an issue with the automatic installer, but that shouldn’t be a problem when uploading the plugin folder directly via FTP.

You might run into other issues as well, as WordPress wasn’t built to work with such a low version of PHP.

What’s the exact error you get when trying to install the plugin?

    Hi Jeremy,

I have managed to resolve the issue. I’m afraid it had completely slipped my mind that there is a way to install a plugin directly via ftp rather than through the installer on WordPress, or via the directory screen.
After installing manually Jetpack is now working as it should do on my site.

My assumption is that the problems I experienced are to do with the low PHP version, and I will try to rectify that with the webhost.

Thanks very much for your help!
