Jquery plugin not working in WordPress.

Hi, i have a md5 plugin which i am using to retrieve data from a api. In my testing environment with out wordpress the plugin did work. But when i place it to wordpress it is not working. In IE error console i found the error “Object Expected”

the plugin is called like this var encoded = $.md5(“the_value”);

I am using javascript and jquery both together. Please advice.
