You can try using Loco translate plugin.
Install the free plugin from WordPress repository and Select Tutor LMS from plugins list inside Loco translate. .
Add a new language translation say in English and Search for the strings you need to replace. . Please follow the screenshot https://prnt.sc/rum0w7 Don’t forget to save

Looks like it would work. This will potentially extend the plugin to be applicable in elementary/primary and secondary/high schools. Do I add it to function.php or upload it as a php file?
I have checked the code and it will surely work if you want to add or remove course levels. . No doubt
You can add this to the functions.php of the child theme file so that it will not affect after taking theme updates.
